New Links

  • High School Foreign Languages Resource Center. A useful collection of links to language learning resources in Chinese, Russian, French, German, Italian, Latin and Spanish. Many of the linked resources are themselves link collections, so to some degree this is a site with 'pointers to pointers'.
  • COERLL: Centre for Open Educational Resources for Language Learning. A directory of Open Educational Resources (OER) in a range of European and non-European languages, including American Sign Language, Hindi, Arabic, and Japanese. Hosted by the University of Texas at Austin, in the USA.
  • Language software reviews. Reviews of popular language learning software, sorted by language. The packages reviewed are mainly from well-known software series - Rosetta Stone, Natively, Transparent. You can compare packages in a language in an at-a-glance table. As the lowest rating is 80%, and every review ends with a 20% money off offer for the package, the reader may well think that each page is more promotion than review, but if taken with a pinch or three of salt this might be a useful overview site.
  • Learn French Online. This site provides a large number of embedded video clips for learners of French, though the video mainly comprises text and voiceover. The clips/lessons are divided into sections: Basic Phrases, Grammar, Verbs, Vocabulary and Songs. Page text backs up the video content.
  • French verb conjugator. A handy bare-bones conjugator from about.com - type in a verb and get a full conjugator. A useful reference.
  • Learn French. A deceptively large site for learners of French, with a lot of text content and interactive Flash games in a range of categories, including words, verbs and phrases. This is part of a larger Learn a Language site with various other available languages, including Russian and Japanese.
  • OneWorld Italiano. Lots of text and multimedia exercises in Italian: grammar, comprehension, vocabulary and more. There are also YouTube videos and full lessons with audio. The site belongs to an Italian language school in Sardinia. Site text in Italian, English, French, Japanese and German.
  • Graphwords. This innovative resource for English language teaches is a 'visual thesaurus'. Type in a word or short phrase to generate a visual mindmap-style visual map of related words and phrases, each of which is clickable to generate a map on that word/phrase. You can save the map as a PNG image for use offline. An entry on Nik Peachey's ELT blog describes the resource in more detail.
  • Tukudoo. A search engine for TEFL teachers which returns links to textbooks on Amazon. Search by string and category. Note that the search button is in the page footer.
  • Macedonian Language E-learning Centre. Links and resources for learners, teachers and linguists for the Macedonian language. Includes interactive Flash lessons and quizzes for beginners.
