Innovative Languages ProjectsHECALL - Higher Education Computer
Assisted Language Learning HECALL HECALL seeks to promote and advance the use of computer assisted language learning in Higher and Further Education in the UK, while at the same time providing a global showcase for all UK Language Centres and Computer Assisted Language Learning Information & Communication Technology for Language TeachersICT4LT is a project, initiated with the aid of European Commission funding, to provide online ICT training materials specifically aimed at language teachers in secondary and tertiary education. A total of 15 training modules at three different levels have been completed in four different languages (English, Finnish, Italian, Swedish) and are freely available on the project website. The initial funding under the EC's Socrates programme ended in December 2000, but the English-language version of the site is still being maintained as a labour of love by Graham Davies. A new module, 4.1 on Computer Aided Assessment, has been added to the English-language version of the site. Virtual Departments for Minority Languages VDML is a two-year project started on 1 October 2000 and funded by JISC. The aim of VDML is to enhance the working experience and interactivity of students and teachers in "minority" (less widely taught) languages departments. Web-Enhanced Language Testing System WELTS is a question bank of language exercises contributed by participating UK Higher Education institutions, a major feature of which is the ability to objectively assess and test students answers online. All test results are stored on the server, which enables students to be tracked and statistics generated on an individual and on groups of students. Any UKHE institution can use WELTS on submission of a 'fee' of 100 questions. WELTS is part of the WELL Project, managed by William Haworth of Liverpool John Moores University. |
