Update 13/03/06

Lots more Gaelic sites added on this update, not unrelated to my taking the distance Gaelic course (An Cùrsa Inntrigidh) run by Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on the Isle of Skye.

New Links

  • CALL 4 All. Described as a "A Virtual Encyclopedia of all major language learning links, Web dictionaries and Computer-Assisted Language Learning organizations in the world", this site aims to be the definitive compendium of links to sites and resources in Computer-Aided Language Learning (CALL). Links are briefly annotated, and sorted alphabetically by title.
  • Colin and Cumberland. The website of the BBC Gaelic learners series for children full of Flash games, quizzes, animations, all with audio clips. Great fun for kids and regressing adults :)
  • Litir do Luchd-ionnsachaidh. The famous Letter to Gaelic Learners, broadcast weekly by Ruaridh MacIlleathain on BBC Radio nan Gaidheal. Each 'letter' consists of a story with linguistic help and vocabulary, and is available as a downloadable MP3 audio clip and a PDF transcript. The service is aimed at learners with some experience of Gaelic.
  • Tir nam Blòg. A nice (we)blog written entirely in Gaelic, with links to as many other Gaelic blogs as the author can find (hence the name).
  • Gaelcast. A podcast in Gaelic. As the 'casts' are in MP3 format you can play them on your computer with MP3 software, or download them to play on a MP3 player or even an iPod. The casts are quite up-to-date and not too hard to understand for this beginner, and provide some nice native speaker listening. Recommended.
  • Taigh na Gàidhlig. A forum for learners of Gaelic, the successor to the late lamented forum at savegaelic.org which went 'off air' in January 2006.
  • Wikipedia Gaelic. The famous contributory online encylopaedia with a Gaelic interface and Gaelic language articles.
  • Lá. "The World's Irish language daily", with news, sport, articles, and more. The daily edition can be downloaded as a free PDF file for offline printing.
  • Portuguese Food Dictionary. Culinary terms in English and Portuguese, sortable by either language and alphabetically.
  • Arabic Teacher. Language learning software for Arabic, covering all levels from Beginner to Advanced.
  • Babylon Idiomas. Spanish language schools in Spain (Valencia, Barcelona) and Argentina (Buenos Aires), offering a range of intensive, qualification, and business courses.
  • Spanish language online radios. Links to over 400 online Spanish-language radio stations across the Spanish-speaking world, sorted by country. The site also has some useful, well-annotated links to other online resources for learners.
  • Scottish Gàidhlig language & culture. A forum set up as a near-clone of the late, lamented savegaelic.org learners forum, and run by a very enthusiastic learner called Màirìn based in Maryland, USA, who also maintains the Learner's Gàidhlig Google group.
  • Gaelic Learners. My own rather quiet Google group for learners of Gaelic, mostly but not exclusively aimed at students following courses run by Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.

Deleted links

The following links have been removed because their hostnames couldn't be looked up (perhaps the domain has lapsed/changed), the URL gave a 404 Not Found error, the site or page was otherwise unreachable, or the site had otherwise become unsuitable for the collection.

  • En Este País: El español de las ciencias sociales. An online multimedia course in Spanish specifically oriented to the language of Social Sciences. Access to the course requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or above.
  • Spanish Links. A collection of links for teachers and learners of Spanish, sorted by topic (Literature, Music, Politics, etc). Some of the pages have "scavenger hunts" to encourage students to explore topics in greater depth.
  • European Language Resources Association. The ELRA is a non-profit organisation which maintains an online repository of language resources ("recorded speech databases, lexicons, grammars, text corpora, and terminological data") for sale to ELRA members and non-members. {Deleted as the site no longer offers these resources.}
