Update 04/11/05
View all updates
Sorry about the rather long delay for this update, but it does have
quite a few extra sites. There are kots more Gaelic sites added on this
update, not unrelated to my taking the distance Gaelic course (An
Cùrsa Inntrigidh) run by Sabhal
Mòr Ostaig on the Isle of Skye.
New Links
- Textalyser. An online text analyser which
will analyse blocks of pasted text, or a web page from a URL, and parse
it to obtain statistics such as word count, average syllable length,
readability, word frequency, etc. A handy little utility.
-
Translated.net. A free
machine translator for a range of language pairs in European and
Asian languages, acting as a promotion for a translation agency.
An interesting wrinkle is that you can specify a text subject, eg
Chemistry, IT, Physics, etc.
- Arabic Windows:
Arabicizing Windows Applications to Read and Write Arabic. Detailed
technical instructions on how to configure MS Windows, and word processors
and web browsers running under Windows, to display and write Arabic.
The paper also has a number of online references users can follow
up.
- Country
names in various languages. A list of names of countries in a
wide variety of languages, including many minority languages, sorted
by the English name of the country. A nice little reference for when
you forget, say, what "Sweden" is in Gaelic.
- The Chinese Outpost.
Subtitled "Demystifying Chinese Since 1998" this site contains
a wealth of resources on spoken and written Chinese, including a tutorial
in Mandarin.
- Trieste
Verb Conjugator. A useful Italian verb conjugator hosted at the
University of Trieste. Enter any verb for conjugation in any tense
in active, passive, or reflexive forms. The no-frills interface is
a refreshing relief from the eye-mangling designs of so many language
sites.
- Virtual
Department of Dutch. An online collaboration of four UK universities
with the Nederlandse
Taalunie (Dutch Language Union) in order to enhance the teaching
of Dutch Studies across UK universities. The site offers a range
of free Study
Packs in Dutch language, history and culture.
- Wisconsin Online Resource Center.
This large repository of Reusable Learning Objects (RLOs) has 18 RLOs,
at the time of writing, in a ABE/ESL section, with titles such as Essay
Writing and Leaving a Telephone Message. The RLOs, and
indeed the site as a whole, are implemented in Flash.
- Into the Blogsphere.
A title that sounds like a crass 1950s B-movie, but a site that contains
serious analyses and critiques of weblogs and weblog communities, including
studies of the pedagogical value of weblogs.
- Search online
Gaelic dictionaries. An English-language interface to search
up to four online dictionaries - two Scots Gaelic, one Irish, one
Manx. You can search by headword, word or substring.
- Definition
of Celtic Language. A page at WordIQ.com with the history and
etymology of Celtic languages, and links to further information on
the various languages in the family.
- Gaelic
Thesaurus. Surely the first of its kind, hosted at Sabhal
Mòr Ostaig on Skye. The Gaelic-language interface only
takes Gaelic search terms, but returns results in English and Gaelic.
Recommended.
- Scottish Gaelic
first names. An alphabetical list of first names in Gaelic and
their English equivalents (eg Margaret - Mairead).
- Am Mòd Nàiseanta
Rìoghail. Website of the Royal National Mod, an annual
festival of Gaelic language and culture held in Scotland. The site
has some useful resources for learners, including a dictionary and
some annotated Gaelic links.
- TAIC Gàidhlig
Leaners Resource. Over 50 lessons for Gaelic beginners, in HTML
and PDF formats, with audio files, grammatical appendices, supplements,
vocabularies, and a pronunciation guide.
- Stuth ionnsachadh
na Gàidhlig air an Eadarlìon. A nice collection
of briefly-annotated links to useful sites for Gaelic learners.
Deleted links
The following links have been removed because their hostnames couldn't
be looked up (perhaps the domain has lapsed/changed), the URL gave a
404 Not Found error, the site or page was otherwise unreachable, or the
site had otherwise become unsuitable for the collection.
- Pedro's
Dictionaries A long list of links to online dictionaries, sorted
by language.
- Country
and Language Lookup. Look up the countries in a which a particular
language is spoken, or the languages spoken in a particular country
and how many people speak them.
- Italian
verbs. Regular verb forms, and some irregular verbs, conjugated.
- Teaching English. An
online, free to use, 'labour exchange' for employers and job seekers
in EFL across the world.
