BBC Languages: German Steps. An interactive, multimedia course for beginners, with dialogues, exercises, glossary, and detailed notes on German language and culture. An excellent starting point for beginners.

Canoo.net. A free resource site on German morphology. With categories such as Inflection (declension and conjugation), Word Formation (compounding, word formation with prefixes and suffixes), German Spelling Reform, the site includes specialized dictionaries for German Orthography, Inflection, Word Formation, and Morphology as well as the German-English Translation Dictionary LEO. Also offers comprehensive description of the rules of German inflection, word formation, and spelling.

College German. Beginners lessons with audio, which can be downloaded, and links to useful websites for learners of German. The site is completely Flash-driven.

Denknetzwerk. A weekly mental puzzle to get you and/or your students scratching heads. It's a little pushy about getting you to sign up to its weekly newsletter, but once you get past that there's an archive of all past puzzles which you can use. Site text in German.

Deutsch lernen mit Jetzt Online. Resources for teachers and learners of German, based on the online magazine Jetzt, including German grammar, reading strategies, and an online forum for teachers.

Deutsch Plus Online. An online multimedia course for beginners in German, from BBC Education Languages.

Deutsch üben im Internet. Online exercises in German culture and language, based on German websites. The learner has to investigate the websites to answer the questions posed.

Deutsche Welle radio & tv - Deutsche Leitseite. The radio and TV station online. Broadcasts available in RealAudio format.

Englisch-Deutsches Wörterbuch A searchable English-German dictionary.

Express Online. Online version of the Cologne-based newspaper.

FAZ.net. Online presence of the daily newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine.

German as a Foreign Language. Launched in April 2000, GFL is "a fully-refereed academic journal which aims to promote research and teaching in the field of German Language".

German Links. German links. A vast collection of links to German language sites, sorted by category, compiled by Swansea University's Department of German.

German Professor. A site put together by students in a conversation group to help beginner learners of German, which includes copious advice and annotated links to useful products, schools and free online services.

German Resources. German crosswords to print out, interactive language exercises, and annotated links to German sites. Hosted by Alcester Grammar School, UK.

Goethe Institute. An organisation for the promotion of German language and culture. The website has a host of links to linguistic and cultural resources, as well as news of current events.

Institut für deutsche Sprache, Mannheim.

Institut für Internationale Kommunikation (IIK) at the Heinrich-Heine-Universität in Düsseldorf. A non-profit-making body which maintains the Forum Wirtschaftsdeutsch (Business German resources) site.

JETZT-ONLINE. An online magazine in German for young people.

JUMA: Das Magazin für junge Deutschlerner weltweit. Government-funded magazine for young people learning German all over the world. Also offers supporting materials for teachers.

Jump Station to Resources in German and Scandinavian. Pointers to German and Scandinavian resources on the Internet.

The Language Learning Playground. German and Spanish lessons for beginners, with RealAudio clips. The site also contains lyrics and recordings of German and Spanish folk songs. (This site was previously known as ASSK International.)

LearnPlus German Course. Online course to "get by in German and to brush up your language skills". Courses are fully interactive and offer the support of real language teachers. Free language assessment and course demo. Spanish course also available.

LEO English-German Dictionary. A searchable online dictionary.

Lixl-Purcell's German WWW Trails

Mittelschulvorbereitung. Some 500 classroom worksheets and lessons - complete texts, spelling and grammar exercises - for teachers of intermediate German. The worksheets are available as PDF documents, to be printed out and used offline in classrooms. Site text in German.

Nürnberger Nachrichten. The Nuremburg local newspaper online.

NZZ Online. Online version of the Swiss daily newspaper.

Das Projekt Gutenberg. A large archive of literary texts by German and non-German authors (in German translation).

Really Useful German Site. Lots of interactive Java exercises for students of German.

Rocket Languages: German Resources. This commercial site has some free learning resources for beginners in grammar, pronunciation, phrases, etc. Mostly text, with a few audio clips. There's a learner's forum open to all.

Stern - the German glossy magazine online.

Süddeutsche Zeitung. Online version of the Munich-based daily broadsheet.

Tages Anzeiger. Swiss daily newspaper written in German.

Tagesthemen. German TV news in RealVideo, with bulletins throughout the day and a searchable news archive.

Die Tageszeitung. The online version of the radical left German newspaper, including dedicated local sections for Berlin, Bremen, and Hamburg. There's also an online forum and chat room.

Die Welt. The German daily newspaper online.

Die Zeit. The German weekly newspaper online.
