Michael Kelly

Professor Michael Kelly is a Professor in the School of Modern Languages (SML) at the University of Southampton, where he is a specialist in modern French culture and society. He is Director of the LTSN Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics, and Area Studies, and sits on the Executive Committee of the University Council of Modern Languages (UCML). He is also involved in the Nuffield Languages Programme and sat on the Nuffield Languages Enquiry into the state of languages in the UK, together with prominent and high-powered figures drawn from the UK educational and corporate sectors.

Prof Michael Kelly became involved with the C&IT Centre at Hull, previously CTI Modern Languages, when the Centre was incorporated into the newly-formed Subject Centre in April 2000. During secret negotiations in late 2001, Kelly and Roel Vismans (then Director of the C&IT Centre) 'agreed' to 'refocus' the role of the Hull Centre, resulting in the transfer of technical services, including the SC website, to Southampton. The consequence of this was a cut of some £35k from Hull's budget from September 2002, making my role redundant and leaving a C&IT 'Centre' comprising just Janet Bartle.
